Cabinet is heading for an extension of the evening lockdown, Tuesday decision about Christmas holidays

Bringing the Christmas holidays forward is still on the table. A final decision will be made on Tuesday. “What we hear is that the outgoing cabinet has not yet agreed,” says political reporter Fons Lambie. “Earlier this week, Minister Slob of Education said that he did not like this measure, but other ministers see it as an opportunity to reduce the infections more quickly.”

The current evening lockdown applies until Saturday 18 December, but will certainly be extended for a few weeks until the new year. The closing time of 5 p.m. remains.

On Monday there will be consultations between the most involved ministers and in the evening there is a Security Council with the mayors of the various security regions. The official decisions will be taken on Tuesday and the press conference of Rutte and De Jonge is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday evening.

Concerns about new variant

The weekly average of corona infections has fallen slightly in recent days, but still much too high. The care departments and ICs are full and some hospitals have to postpone planned care. There are also concerns about the advancing omikron variant.

This variant is much more contagious and can lead to a new increase in hospital admissions, but the uncertainty is great.

The Senate and House of Representatives recently approved the option of introducing the corona pass for non-essential shops, but the outgoing cabinet is not going to do that for the time being.
