Cabinet formally calls South Limburg floods a disaster, government pays part of the damage

The floods in South Limburg are “in a formal sense” a disaster. This was announced by outgoing Prime Minister Rutte after the cabinet’s crisis deliberations.

It means that the cabinet Compensation for Damage Act puts into operation. In this way, victims quickly obtain clarity whether their damage is (partially) reimbursed by the government, if their insurance does not cover it.

The law is applied in cases where the damage is so great that insurance companies may not be able to bear it. It must first be established that the damage is the result of force majeure – and that is what the cabinet has now done.

‘No need for snoopers’

The outgoing prime minister called the situation in the area “as we can all see, absolutely serious”. Tomorrow afternoon he will visit areas in Limburg “where it will be exciting in the coming days”.

Rutte therefore does not go to the affected area and called on others not to do so either. “Please, try to avoid the disaster area if you can. There is no need for snoopers.”
