On 9 December, the Royal Military Police will carry out additional border controls to combat people smuggling and illegal migration. The government has agreed to restrict the free movement of people and goods within Europe for six months at this time.
It is not clear how intensive the investigations will be. In any case, the military police will not get additional people to carry out the investigations, said Minister Faber (Asylum).
EU member states can only introduce border controls if there is an unforeseen situation or in urgent cases. According to the cabinet, this is now the case due to the large number of asylum seekers.
Germany is already doing it
At the moment military police are only doing random checks around border crossings. Several EU member states, like the Netherlands, want to strengthen their border control. Germany has already done so to combat terrorism and illegal immigration. France also does it.
The border controls have already been announced in the main agreement and are also part of the asylum deal that the coalition parties concluded last month. Several experts, and also many opposition parties, doubt whether there is an exception to European rules for this situation.
Do not obstruct economic traffic
Minister Faber contacted Brussels and the other member states immediately after the decision of the Council of Ministers. According to EU guidelines, this must be done four weeks in advance, so border controls can only start on December 9.
The inspections will be carried out in such a way as to hinder economic traffic and passenger traffic in the border areas as little as possible. At Schiphol and other airports, only risky flights are checked.
