The accident happened on the A27 at the exit Utrecht Noord. The mother was rushed to hospital, reported a press photographer who arrived at the scene at night. The child apparently would have been less seriously injured.
The police confirm to De Telegraaf that one of the victims has been taken to hospital.
Bystanders in action
The woman rammed into the guardrails around midnight and, it seems, came to a stop about a hundred yards away. Soon after, the car must have caught fire. “Bystanders who stopped, immediately went to the car and took the mother and the five or six-year-old child from the already burning vehicle,” says photographer Michiel van Beers.
The emergency services arrived shortly afterwards. The fire brigade extinguished the car and ambulance personnel provided care to mother and child. Rijkswaterstaat closed the road.
The police heard witnesses on the spot. “We are still investigating the cause,” said a police spokesman.
