Build Your Dream (BYD), a technology company from China plans to invest IDR 11.7 trillion in Indonesia. The investment is said to produce up to 150 thousand units of electric vehicles per year.
“BYD has planned an investment of IDR 11.7 trillion with an electric vehicle production capacity of 150 thousand units per year. This investment is not only proof of BYD’s confidence in the potential of the Indonesian market, but it is also a strategic step in strengthening Indonesia’s position. as a center for the production of electric vehicles in regional and global areas,” said Plt. Director-General of Metal Industry, Machinery, Transport Equipment and Electricity, Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin), Putu Juli Ardika, from a written statement, Thursday (17 /10).
According to Putu, BYD’s investment in Indonesia will boost the domestic parts industry to continue developing. It is believed that technology will be transferred from BYD to Indonesia’s components industry.

“This technology transfer is very important to improve the capabilities of the national parts industry, so that it can move up in class and be competitive in the Global Value Chain (GVC),” explained Putu.
Putu explained that by increasing technological capabilities, it is hoped that Indonesia’s component industry will not only become a domestic supplier, but can also actively participate in the global supply chain, especially for the electric vehicle industry.
Meanwhile, BYD’s Director of Administration Department, Andy Lin, said that the decision to invest in Indonesia was an important part of BYD’s global strategy.
“We plan to make Indonesia the regional headquarters in Asia Pacific, with facilities for research and development, production, sales, after-sales and training. We also hope to achieve the production achievement of 15 million BYD in Indonesia,” said Andy.
In the future, Lin said BYD will launch more electric vehicle (EV) models in Indonesia, as well as a plug-in hybrid model (PHEV). The latest information is that BYD will launch the flagship electric MPV Denza D9.

In early 2024, the Coordinating Minister of the Economy Airlangga Hartarto said that the value of BYD’s investment in Indonesia will reach US$ 1.3 billion or the equivalent of IDR 20.33 trillion (exchange rate IDR 15,639).
The value is to set up production facilities for the Dolphin, Atto 3, and Seal and other models.
According to Airlangga, the BYD factory is capable of producing 150 thousand units per year.
Airlangga said information about BYD’s investment in the country was obtained from company executives.
“The government continues to encourage BYD to increase local content so that it can promote business competitiveness,” he said.
