BYD to build plant in Mexico

Chinese electric carmaker BYD has narrowed its list of finalists for a production plant in Mexico that would supply Latin America to three states, the company’s Mexico CEO Jorge Vallejo said Wednesday.

Although Vallejo declined to name the finalists, he did tell Reuters that they were those who offered a series of incentives to make their investment and that the incentives included tax advantages, land, management and preferential prices.

Reuters reported that the new plant could be located in Nuevo Leon, San Luis Potosi or Puebla.

BYD’s regional head for the Americas, Stella Li, said in May that the plant would be “centrally located.”

Vallejo said the company had not yet identified which models would be produced at the Mexican plant.

In April, Reuters reported that Mexico’s federal government had halted incentives to Chinese electric vehicle makers under pressure from the United States. BYD has already said that its Mexican plant will not supply the US market.

Nuevo León is a center for automobile production, where it had been rumored that a Tesla megafactory would be built, although the federal government has denied this.

Earlier this week, the governor of the state, Samuel García, announced on social media X that a new Volvo plant will be located there.

The state of Puebla has long been home to Volkswagen production, while BMW manufactures electric vehicles in San Luis Potosí.

On Wednesday, BYD introduced its Song Pro plug-in hybrid SUV in Mexico at a starting price of 599,880 pesos.

The launch in Mexico City was the second in recent months.
