China is one of the countries where work on the development of various autonomous driving technologies is very intensive – there are self-driving taxis operating in the districts of certain cities, including the country’s big cities Beijing and Shanghai, but the outlook for the future is not clear for the Chinese either. One of the country’s largest electric car manufacturers, BYD, has stated that fully autonomous, self-driving cars are almost impossible.
Such comments were made by one of the company’s spokespersons, Li Junfei. He explains that fully self-driving cars in themselves are the wrong proposition, and it brings with it a host of related issues, such as who will be at fault for traffic accidents. “We believe that self-driving car technology that completely separates the human from driving is very far away and actually impossible to achieve,” said Li, speaking to reporters at the Shanghai Auto Show.
He also said that there are companies and even entire industries that invest a lot of money in these technologies, but after many years these investments will still lead to nothing. Many automakers are working on such technologies. Perhaps the loudest example is Tesla, which has named its systems “Autopilot” and “Full Self-Drive”. As we’ve written, these systems fall far short of fully self-driving car functionality, although the names might create false associations about the system’s true capabilities. Of course, Tesla is not the only manufacturer that develops such systems – virtually all self-respecting automakers do it.
