Jakarta –
BYD’s plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) has been registered in Indonesia. Is BYD interested in selling PHEV cars in Indonesia?
It seems that BYD only wants to play in the battery-based electric car segment. Globally, BYD has a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) technology called DM-i technology.
The DM-i hybrid technology is likely to enter Indonesia. As proof, BYD registered a car design with DM-i technology. The design patent is registered in the official document Industrial Design Gazette No. 56/DI/2024 published by the Directorate of Copyright and Industrial Design, General Directorate of Intellectual Property, Ministry of Law and Human Rights.

In the document, BYD COMPANY LIMITED listed the design of an SUV that is believed to have PHEV or DM-i technology. The registered design is identical to the BYD Song L DM-i PHEV car that was recently launched in China.
PT BYD Motor Indonesia’s Head of PR & Government Relations Luther Panjaitan said that BYD basically fully supports all kinds of energy transition initiatives that the government has confirmed. Including battery-based pure electric cars or PHEVs.
“Of course, when referring to the global validation of NEVs (new energy vehicles), this also includes PHEVs. special deals,” Luther told detikOto, Monday (14/10/2024).
Luther emphasized that BYD is a major player in the NEV industry. According to him, in terms of product line, BYD’s PHEV or DM-i technology cars could enter Indonesia.
“However, favorable policies that support competition are still needed, especially if they are expected to be able to match the price level of ICE cars (conventional engine cars) to speed up the transition,” he said.
