BYD Overtakes Tesla as World’s Largest Electric Car Manufacturer

The Chinese electric car manufacturer BYD has overtaken Tesla and become the world’s largest electric car manufacturer, judging by the number of cars sold. The Chinese manufacturer managed to beat Tesla by delivering 526,400 electric cars in the last quarter of last year, while Tesla reports 484,500 cars delivered.

These figures are records for both automakers within a single quarter, but this is the first time in history that BYD has delivered more cars than Tesla in a single quarter. It must be admitted that the offer of BYD models is wider than that of Tesla, offering cars in both budget and more expensive segments.

On an annual basis, Tesla is still ahead – last year Tesla delivered 1.8 million cars, BYD was able to deliver 1.6 million, but it looks like the Chinese manufacturer could overtake Tesla already this year in this statistical indicator as well. The Chinese automaker’s main market is still at home in China, of course, but BYD is slowly expanding in Europe, with the company recently reaching an agreement with Hungary to build an electric car factory in the central European country. This will allow BYD to manufacture cars closer to its customers in Europe, which will reduce various costs related to transportation.
