BYD Buys First Cargo Ship to Meet Global Demand for Electric Cars

Chinese car manufacturer BYD had a successful 2023, selling the most electric cars worldwide. In order to supply customers in Europe and other parts of the world with its cars, the car manufacturer has purchased its first cargo ship, which has already set off from Shenzhen to Europe with more than 5,000 cars on board.

The first vessel is named “BYD Explorer No.1” as it sets out for the Netherlands and Germany. BYD and several other Chinese car manufacturers have started ordering ships, thus trying to make car transportation more convenient, faster and cheaper. BYD plans to acquire seven more such vessels over the next two years, according to the manufacturer’s press release.

Last year, the Chinese automaker sold about 3 million cars, most of them domestically in China, but they were also exported to other countries. Exports and new factories closer to the end customer are among BYD’s primary goals for continued expansion. Although there is some concern in the auto industry that the demand for electric cars is not as high as expected, this is more related to the high prices of these machines. Chinese manufacturers have so far successfully filled the budget class electric car niche and they are ready to do so in the future.
