BYD Bao Leopard 5: A Land Cruiser Prado Lookalike Making Waves at the 2023 Bangkok International Motor Show

Seeing this car from afar, maybe what comes to your mind is the Land Cruiser Prado. But make no mistake, this is the BYD Bao Leopard 5.

The 2023 Bangkok International Motor Show (BIMS) will be enlivened by Chinese manufacturers. BYD is among the Chinese manufacturers taking part in the annual Bangkok automotive exhibition. There are a variety of cars presented by BYD, one of which is a sturdy SUV for adventure.

The SUV in question was alerted by Fang Cheng Bao. Fang Cheng Bao is a sub-brand of BYD which was first introduced in June 2023. Bao Leopard 5 is one of its products. In terms of size, the Bao 5 is 4,890 mm long, 1,970 mm wide, 1,920 mm high, and has a wheelbase of 2,800 mm.

This SUV is built on the Dual Mode Off-road (DMO) Super Hybrid platform. The shape is muscular, the bumper is thick, and boxy. At first glance, its appearance resembles a Land Cruiser Prado or Land Rover Defender.

Inside, the center console looks sturdy and has various functions such as a four-wheel drive system and climate system. Even though it focuses on off-road capabilities, the Bao 5 has a screen that stretches across the dashboard. For the driver, there is a 12.3 inch cluster digital screen while in the front passenger seat there is a touch screen of the same size.

In the middle, the touch screen is even larger at 15.6 inches. The screen is positioned below the AC and charging pad. The triple-screen setup is standard for the higher-end variants sold in China. There is also a head-up display feature with a projection area of ​​50 inches.

Behind the bonnet, there is a 1.5L engine combined with hybrid technology. In total, the system can produce up to 687 PS of power and 760 Nm of torque. The engine is paired with an E-CVT transmission. Interestingly, there are two electric motors paired with an engine at the front with 272 PS and 360 Nm of torque and at the rear with 387 PS and Nm of torque.

Acceleration from 0-100 km/h can be achieved in 4.8 seconds. The electric motor is supplied by an LFP battery with a capacity of 31.8 kWh. When used alone, the electric motorbike can cover a distance of 125 km. The battery can be charged with a DC current with a maximum capacity of 100 kW. 30-80 percent battery can be charged in 16 minutes. There is also a V2L option which can supply up to 6 KW to provide power to electronic devices and accessories.
