BYD Atto 3: The Best-Selling Electric Car in Sweden, Surpassing Tesla Model Y and European Competitors

The ambition of Chinese electric car manufacturers to expand into Europe and offer their cars in our part of the world is nothing new. Their ambitions also have a real, tangible cover – Chinese-made electric cars are competitive and able to compete with products created by Europeans. If anyone needs a reminder, even Audi has agreed with the Chinese to buy their electric car platform. It seems that the manufacturers of the Asian powerhouse are gradually realizing their ambitions – in July, the BYD Atto 3 electric crossover was sold more than the Tesla Model Y in Sweden. The same Model Y that is the best-selling model in Europe in the first half of the year. The Atto 3 thus became the best-selling electric car in Sweden last month.

In the field of electric cars, Sweden may not be Norway, but it is still a solvent, economically developed country with a good enough infrastructure, which makes you think that these results of the BYD model are a glimpse into the future. When I visited Sweden recently, I was a little surprised at how many Chinese vehicles I saw there. Not only these BYD cars can be seen on the streets, but also quite a lot of MGs, which, as you know, are now in Chinese rather than British hands.

During the month, BYD sold 721 Atto 3 units in Sweden, which was twice as many as the Model Y (359 cars). The Chinese manufacturer also managed to outcompete VW ID.4 (710 cars), BMW i4 (385 cars) and Škoda Enyaq (370 cars). Such data was provided by the “Mobility Sweden” car association.

If we look at the first seven months of 2023, the Model Y is in any case the most sold electric car in Sweden – 8901 cars were sold in Sweden.

BYD Atto 3 is offered at a relatively affordable price – the starting price of the car is slightly above 40 thousand euros and it can travel up to 420 kilometers on a single charge in the WLTP cycle. BYD entered the European market very quickly, offering Atto 3 and several other electric cars in several western countries. Entering countries such as Norway, Sweden, Germany and the Netherlands is, of course, deliberate – the manufacturer wants to offer its product in solvent countries, where the transition to electric cars is relatively faster than elsewhere.
