On the sidelines of the Conference of the Parties on Climate (COP27) in Sharm El-Sheikh, the Emirate of Abu Dhabi announced a “strategic goal” to generate 60% of electricity from renewable energy sources by 2035.
The initiative, launched by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi in collaboration with the Department of Energy, aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming and promote sustainable development, while the UAE is a Country that has built its wealth on oil.
Sheikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, said: “This is not just a goal that we announce. We have medium and long term goals, with very specific initiatives, some of which have begun. and we are about to start implementing more. “
He stressed that the authorities intend to achieve this by relying on renewable and clean energy sources “especially solar energy … we will use our sun and, to a lesser extent, wind energy” as well as green and blue hydrogen. , underlining that the private sector will contribute significantly to achieving this goal.
Last year, the UAE launched a “strategic initiative” that aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
It is currently building two of the largest solar power plants in the world in the capital, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai, the main trading center in the Middle East and North Africa. He also joined the nuclear club with the opening of the Barakah nuclear power plant, the first in the Arab world.
The United Arab Emirates will host the next edition of the Climate Conference (COP28) in 2023. AFP
