The BVB recently announced two new additions to the coaching bench. With Nuri Sahin and Sven Bender, Edin Terzic gets two ex-Borussia players who will help him but could also be dangerous. A comment.
Edin Terzic was pleased about the signing of the two new assistant coaches Nuri Sahin and Sven Bender. The BVB head coach himself is said to have wanted the two of them for his coaching staff. But is he possibly digging his own grave? Or is this already a well-thought-out anticipation of the coming summer?
The critical voices surrounding Edin Terzic became louder and louder over the course of the season and the coach seemed ailing at times. There were many indications that he was only allowed to stay because, as a Dortmund boy and ardent fan of the club, he is (or could be) a great figure of identification. Because of these facts, he also enjoyed enormous credit among fans for a long time. However, this now seems to have fizzled out for many people and there is a desire for change in order to meet the perhaps too high demands.
The credit of identification and the black and yellow passion is no longer given with the commitments of Nuri Sahin and Sven Bender. At least not to this extent. The puppy protection has also now expired. As former BVB professionals and top performers, Sahin and Bender themselves have not only become fan favorites, but also have a high level of identification. Both became German champions with BVB and were part of Dortmund’s heyday under Jürgen Klopp. Perhaps the most glorious and beautiful time for Dortmund fans in recent years. Sahin even comes from BVB’s youth team. More identification background is almost impossible.
Both new additions to the coaching bench have already indicated their coaching competence and are considered great coaching talents. As head coach of the Turkish club Antalyaspor, Nuri Sahin has a points average of 1.49 in 92 games and has already gained valuable experience. Sven Bender has also had a taste of coaching with the German U16 and U17 teams and is brimming with ideas.
Are both of them coming to support Terzic or are they the chosen successors who have now been trained personally by Terzic for six months? Should the latter actually be the big plan behind this coaching deal, does Terzic know about it? What happens next for him? Will he withdraw from the coaching chair of his own accord and take on another role in the club and would heads roll elsewhere? Or are the two now double bottoms just in case?
The recent personnel decisions surrounding Sahin and Bender make perfect sense from a sporting point of view, as they not only bring a breath of fresh air into the BVB cosmos, which has sometimes been stuttering recently. New, innovative game and training ideas are likely to be absorbed like a sponge by the players. The solidarity with the recently somewhat grumpy BVB fans will also become more noticeable again. Seen this way, Borussia is doing a lot, if not everything, right. But the big unknown behind all the brilliant advantages is Terzic’s personality and his future role. If things don’t work out, this constellation is guaranteed to be widely reported in the media and is likely to increase the pressure on everyone involved. Then this decision could quickly blow up in BVB’s face.
Another big question mark for me is of course: What happens if there is no success in the second half of the season? How long will the BVB bosses hold on to Terzic? How long will Terzic himself last? Do you take the risk and promote the moderately experienced newcomers or is there perhaps a bigger solution in mind? Could the plan be such that a big solution like Glasner or Nagelsmann comes along in the summer and the two of them have the task of preparing the team for the respective style of play? Sahin and Bender are like good home contents insurance. It’s better to have one, especially when you actually need it.
Somehow it still feels like every summer. People nod admiringly towards Dortmund, congratulate them on fantastic transfers and yet the fruits don’t come and a feeling of disappointment remains. A bitter aftertaste of incompletion. But maybe everything will be better now. At least it will be different. With a little more real love.
