Although Jadon Sancho was absent due to an injury, the striker caused a stir during the Champions League quarter-final match of his club Borussia Dortmund at Manchester Citys. This lost the Dortmund with 1: 2. And there was already an uproar in the first half.
City keeper Ederson had lost the ball in the 38th minute in front of his own penalty area to Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham, who had stormed towards the empty goal. But referee Ovidiu Hategan had decided on the teenager’s foul instead of continuing the scene and then having it checked.
Sancho then wrote in a tweet “This Ref needs checking!” and combined that with an emoji in which a person grabs his head. This criticism was well received by his followers. Shortly after the final whistle, almost 80,000 accounts had liked the post.
BVB coach Edin Terzic judged the scene a little more soberly compared to his 21-year-old, Twitter-affine protégé. “I know how it is as a referee,” said the coach at Sky. “What I would have liked is that he just let it run and then look at it on the screen,” Terzic continued, but in the end he commented: “But unfortunately that’s also football.”
