Buying a Car: What to Consider Before Making Your Purchase

For those who don’t have a private car, they might be tempted to buy one so they can use it in the near future or during Eid next year.

However, there are several things that must be considered before buying a car. Financial Planner from the Advisors Alliance Group Andy Nugroho said there are two main points that must be considered before buying a car, namely needs and financial capabilities.

“Even though it’s financially sufficient, but you don’t really need (a car) for what? Because if we live in a big city, like Jakarta, the use of a car can be replaced by ojol or public transportation,” he told detikcom, Monday (24/4/2023) ).

Then, if you are still financially unable to buy a car, you should not do it. Because, it takes about 30% of income to pay car installments so that other needs are also met.

“Don’t let it be for the sake of having a car, let alone unproductive ones, but then we have to eat sparingly, so we can’t have fun, can’t heal, in my opinion it’s just not right,” he said.

He also suggests having a garage first before buying a car. That’s because, if you buy a car without having a garage, it will disturb the local community if the car is parked on the side of the road.

“You have to have a garage. This is financially not regulated, but that happens a lot in society. We have a car but don’t have a garage, so we end up parking on the side of the road, that’s blocking the road,” he explained.

Furthermore, Andy said that it is also necessary to have car insurance if later consumers buy a car. According to him, this is very important because we don’t know what will happen to us later. Plus, if you buy a car on credit, it usually includes car insurance for the duration of the tenor.

“Incase there is a risk with our car, we don’t need to spend more money to repair it,” he concluded.

Separately, Financial Planner from Tatadana Consulting, Tejasari Asad explained several things that must be considered before buying a car. First, make sure the nominal down payment. Second, the ability to pay installments.

“Because the installments will have an effect on the following months. So, the installments will bother us or not. So, it’s just a matter of adjusting the installment period so that it’s not too burdensome for us,” he told detikcom.
