Butantan receives 3,000 liters of IFA to produce an additional 5 million doses of Coronavac | Sao Paulo

The Butantan Institute received, on Monday morning (19), another 3 thousand liters of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (IFA), raw material for the production of CoronaVac. The raw material will be enough to produce an additional 5 million vaccines against Covid-19. Coronavac is the vaccine against Covid-19 produced by Butantan in partnership with the Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinovac.

The shipment, coming from Beijing, China, arrived at the São Paulo International Airport, in Guarulhos, at 6:15 am. The Turkish Airlines flight passed through stopovers in Turkey and Iceland.

The new IFA lot should have arrived on April 8th. With the delay, Butantan will complete the delivery of 46 million doses of Coronavac to the Ministry of Health by May 10. The initial promise was that these doses would be delivered to the federal government by the end of April. The delay occurs because the filling and labeling process, the final stage of production of the vaccine, takes a few days.

The Butantan Institute suspended the dose container of the CoronaVac vaccine after a delay in the arrival of raw materials. In the initial schedule, the Institute should have received the raw material between April 6 and 8. In order to complete the delivery of 46 million doses, foreseen in the first contract with the federal government, the Butantan Institute depended on the arrival of the vaccine input, which is imported from China.

Last week, Butantan delivered over 1 million doses of Coronavac to the National Immunization Plan (PNI) and reached 40.7 million doses since the start of deliveries, on January 17th.

In March, Butantan received a shipment of 8,200 liters of IFA, corresponding to about 14 million doses. Another 11 thousand liters of inputs arrived in the country in February.

According to a scientific article sent for review and publication in the Lancet scientific journal, one of the most respected in the world, the effectiveness for Covid-19 symptomatic cases reached 50.7%, compared to the 50.38% initially reported. That is, the vaccine halves new records of contamination in a vaccinated population.

According to the study, the CoronaVac’s effectiveness can reach 62.3% with an interval of more than 21 days between the two doses of the vaccine.
