But Wolfsburg’s Marc Günther again the winner

Gifhorn.A successful comeback for the Tankumsee Triathlon: The 18th edition on Sunday attracted around 470 endurance athletes to Gifhorn. There had been around 575 registrations beforehand, but due to quarantines and injuries, numerous interested parties had to drop out at short notice. Among others, the main organizer Jan Poguntke and professional Mika Noodt, both from the organizing VfL Wolfsburg. In the end, the winners were unsurprisingly Marc Günther (VfL) and Malin Ehlers (VfB Fallersleben).

“It was an exciting race,” said Poguntke. Günther, the last winner before the long Corona break in 2019, was just 15 seconds ahead of his Wolfsburg club colleague Daniel Wienbreier in 56:48 minutes. “Our ‘old bastard’ – I may say so – got in the way quite a bit,” said the head of the event with a smile. Günther had gained the decisive cushion on his closest pursuer by swimming, on the racing bike and on the running course Wienbreier was even slightly faster.

Six VfLers among the top ten

Six VfL starters were among the top ten, as well as three from the Triathlon Team Braunschweig. “I didn’t have that in mind,” Poguntke was amazed at the performance of third-placed Lars Wolter.

Unsurprisingly, Fallersleberin Ehlers secured victory in the women’s race in a time of 1:06:10 hours. Janina Romanowski from Braunschweig (1:06:38) and VfLerin Christine Becker (1:07:04) landed close behind her. “Malin still prevailed with her running strength,” Poguntke summed it up. She was by far the fastest on foot in 19:32 minutes, so she was able to intercept Romanowski and Becker.

180 volunteers and “many happy looks”

VfL is also “completely satisfied” with everything around it. The weather played along, and there was a lot going on around the lake. “You could see that people were in the mood again. There were many happy looks from the athletes, spectators, but also from the around 180 volunteers, without whom something like this would not be possible,” says Poguntke. Noodt was also part of the team of helpers, the injured VfL professional gave the starting signal and distributed medals at the award ceremony.

Event number 19 in 2023 should be nothing in the way. According to Poguntke, the date will be announced shortly, “but we are expecting the second weekend in June again”.
