SAKAEO: On Friday (July 1, 2022), the first day that Thailand lifted all entry restrictions for foreigners, Cambodian and Vietnamese tourists swarmed at the border crossing in Aranyaprathet district in eastern Sakaeo province.
The Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) has abolished the Thailand Passport effective July 1, 2022, meaning foreign tourists are no longer required to register online or purchase Covid-19 insurance with coverage of at least US$10,000 . The lifting of restrictions aims to boost tourism and boost the economy after the number of infections has fallen.
“The more than 1,000 Cambodian visitors include traders wanting to sell their wares at the Rong Kluea border market, as well as visitors wanting to see the sights in Sakaeo. Most of the visitors are from Poipet in Cambodia and entered the Kingdom through the Thai-Cambodian Friendship Bridge,” Sakaeo Immigration Chief Lt. Col. Rung Thongmon informed the press on Friday.

According to Sakeo immigration chiefs, the police and customs authorities are deploying additional officers at the checkpoint so that the entry documents can be processed quickly. “However, the flow of tourists is smooth and fast as they don’t have to queue to have their ‘Thailand Pass’ registration checked,” said Khun Rung. He added that in addition to Cambodian tourists, many Vietnamese nationals also enter Thailand via Cambodia.
About 250 kilometers from Bangkok, the Rong Kluea Market is a well-known tourist hotspot in Sakaeo. The market near the Ban Khlong Luek border checkpoint is known for selling clothing, tableware, electronics and other products at very reasonable prices. Most vendors are Chinese, Cambodian and Vietnamese.
