Businessman promises more job retention after competitive bid for Van Hool

BRUSSELS (ANP/BELGA) – Businessman Guido Dumarey, like industrial group VDL, wants to take over the bus division of the bankrupt Van Hool from Belgium. He also promises to “save at least a third more jobs”, the Belgian entrepreneur told Radio 1.

On Monday it was announced that the Dutch VDL wants to take over the bankrupt bus company together with trailer manufacturer Schmitz Cargobull. It has now emerged that Dumarey has made a competing offer together with the American dealer of Van Hool buses, ABC.

Dumarey said on Belgian radio that about a thousand jobs can be retained in Koningshooikt, Van Hool’s home town. VDL’s offer would preserve 650 to 950 jobs. The businessman, known as a ‘business doctor’, says he has support from two banks for the plan.
