Business in Offenbach: Between triple steps and lightning developments

The final report of the economic development shows “concrete progress” for the Offenbach business location – despite Corona.

Felix Schwenke (SPD) would have liked to have held a couple of “confetti press conferences”, as he calls them, this year. Instead of always announcing positive reports in video conferences or telephone calls, the Offenbach mayor would have liked to be there when companies were relocating to and from the city in order to properly promote the Offenbach location. For example, when the IT service provider Lomosoft with 50 workstations moved to the Kaiserlei. “These are jobs that will still be there in 20 years”, said Schwenke when presenting the annual report of the economic development agency.

Despite the coronavirus pandemic, which dominated everything this year, and the associated economic problems, there was “concrete progress” in 2020. Corona has always driven the city with corresponding programs such as the economic and aid package in the amount of 3.6 million euros for the companies in the short term, but “we have not lost the compass and had long-term structural improvements in mind,” emphasized the OB .

As examples, he cited the establishment of the Expert Council for Economic Development, the decision on the downtown concept for the future, the continuation of the design park on the former Clariant site and the relocation and relocation of companies. 99 companies were relocated, 20 companies with 2200 employees were relocated within the city. “We have implemented a mega-large data center and a second that has already gone online,” said Schwenke. That was a flash development.

Good value for money for land

“The advantage in Offenbach is the speed. We have become significantly faster over the past few years, ”said Jürgen Amberger, the head of the Office for Economic Development and Real Estate, who will be retiring at the end of the year. The pace is mainly due to the building permit round, which meets every two weeks. Then the city administration and the municipal utilities group come together to find solutions for commercial construction projects. Another advantage is the good price-performance ratio for properties, added Amberger. In addition, around 600,000 square meters of commercial space would be available – half of which is owned by the city. “That is an unimaginable pound in the future,” said Amberger.

The biggest shortcoming lies in the communication, which should be further improved. This was one of the reasons why Felix Schwenke traveled to the World Economic Summit in Davos to make Offenbach interesting for companies. Corona, however, slowed many things, he said. For example, the marketing of the new commercial space in the Kaiserlei, which was postponed to 2021. “We would like to bring these fillet pieces onto the market under economically fairly stable framework conditions,” said Schwenke. That is why the Kaiserlei is currently only moving forward in triple steps.
