LThe egg processing company Lecoque Eggs, located in the eastern industrial area of Tongeren, was completely destroyed by a violent industrial fire during the night from Monday to Tuesday. The workers who were present were able to leave in time and no injuries were reported.
The fire started at around 9pm on Monday and quickly became a sea of flames. There was a lot of smoke with the fire. When the first fire teams arrived, the flames were already several meters into the air.
Firefighters from across the Limburg region battled the fire on three fronts throughout the night. Tanker trucks full of water arrived to extinguish the fire from East Limburg and North Limburg. The main challenge was to prevent the fire from spreading to surrounding businesses. However, the firefighters could not prevent the entire company from burning down.

“There were no injuries, but the material damage was terrible. Due to the intensity of the fire, an outbreak is still possible. If the smell of fire is bothering people, we advise them to keep windows and doors closed and turn off ventilation systems. The Heersterveldweg is closed to traffic,” said the southwest Limburg fire zone on Tuesday morning.
Measures were taken on Tuesday morning in the business area to assess the risk of soot or smoke pollution to surrounding businesses. The measured values were considered to be below the risk level, so that nearby businesses are accessible. On Tuesday morning, the smell of fire was still visible in the center of Tongeren.
The family business Lecoque Eggs specializes in selling cooked and peeled eggs in Belgium and abroad. The fire has currently put 40 workers out of work.
