Business Confidence in Indonesia Soars as Manufacturing PMI Reaches Record High in March 2024

Jakarta

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto assessed that business world confidence remains maintained. This can be seen from the Indonesian Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) figures in March 2024 which were at an expansionary level for 31 consecutive months.

Airlangga said this high level of trust not only creates a conducive environment for investment, but also encourages sustainable economic growth and expansion of employment opportunities.

“The Manufacturing PMI in March 2024 reached the level of 54.2 and is the highest figure since November 2021. This provides an indication that business actors in the manufacturing sector continue to hold confidence in the resilience and prospects of the Indonesian economy,” said Airlangga in a written statement, quoted Monday (8/ 4/2024).

The achievement of Manufacturing PMI figures which are maintained at expansive levels is generally driven by the consistency of market demand which continues to grow, both domestically and abroad. Companies responded to this increase by increasing output to meet market needs.

Especially in March 2024, the company’s output volume even recorded the highest increase since the last 27 months. High demand also encourages the opening of new jobs, both to meet increasing demand and as a response to the need for production raw materials.

At the same time, it is claimed that the economy continues to show stability amidst increasingly widespread employment growth. Apart from that, the Business World Activity Survey (SKDU) conducted by Bank Indonesia (BI) shows an optimistic picture.

Data on the Weighted Net Balance (WNB) in the fourth quarter of 2023 shows a figure of 13.17%, indicating that the performance of business activities remains strong. Business actors from various sectors recorded expansion which was in line with conditions in the Indonesian Manufacturing PMI, which in this survey also reported an increase in business opportunities.

Business actors’ optimism is expected to continue to increase in the first quarter of 2024 with WNB reaching 15.38%. Apart from that, the company’s financial condition remained stable, as reflected in the Net Balance (SB) Liquidity of 24.42%, which was higher than the previous quarter at 18.71%. The used production capacity figures for the fourth quarter of 2023 also show a percentage that remains high, namely 73.91%.

“The momentum of the ongoing and upcoming National Religious Holidays (HBKN) provides additional encouragement and optimism for business actors. This positive momentum is predicted to continue amidst maintained inflation in line with the 2024 inflation target of 2.5 “±1%. In March 2024 itself, inflation was recorded at 3.05%, maintained within the target range,” concluded Airlangga.
