NEW YORK – A raging fire erupted behind a commercial building in New Jersey early Monday, engulfing a half-dozen coach-style trailers that had been leased to the 96th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City At the end of the week.
It was not immediately clear what sparked the fire in Kearny, which broke out near an industrial complex on the Lincoln Highway just before 6 in the morning.
Helicopter 4 showed angry orange flames shooting up from the compound as the first firefighters arrived on the scene before dawn. Apparently at least six or seven buses were destroyed.
A company of the address linked to the fire has identified itself as the owner of the vehicles. He said he was hired to provide trailers for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in Manhattan on Thursday.
Macy’s released a statement later Monday confirming the affected company was one of its parade-selling partners and saying it was “saddened to learn of the fire.”
“This fire will not affect our needs for this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade as the company is providing backup production trailers,” the Macy’s spokesperson said.
