(CNN) — At least seven people, including the driver, were injured after a bus crashed into a barrier on an overpass in the Bronx area of New York City, according to the local Police Department.
The bus hung over the road below, police said.
The accident occurred around midnight Thursday on the westbound Cross Bronx Expressway and University Avenue, according to police. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals, authorities said.
“The bus fell approximately 50 feet (15 meters) onto the access road,” said New York Fire Department Deputy Chief Paul Hopper on the department’s Instagram account.

It is not yet clear whether the accident was caused by operator error or mechanical malfunction and so far no arrests have been made, police added.
The streets near the crash site were closed and authorities say traffic was delayed in the area. Heavy tow trucks were at the scene preparing to remove the hanging bus, according to police.
“We are making sure that all fuel and other hazardous materials inside the vehicle are secured until the bus can be pulled onto the road,” Acting Fire Service Battalion Chief Steven Moore said on Instagram.
