NEW YORK – The wave of gun violence continues unabated as this time it was a New York City NJ Transit driver who allegedly pulled an illegal handgun and shot a group of teenagers, seriously injuring one, after an apparent over the weekend attack week, authorities say.
Police officers responded to a call of gunfire in Jersey City near Monticello and Jewett Avenues shortly before 10 p.m. Saturday. There, they learned that NJ Transit driver Charles Fieros, 48, of Staten Island, allegedly shot the group outside the bus. The nature of the reported attack is unknown, but a Jersey City official said he sustained head and face injuries during the course of the attack. He was taken to hospital for treatment, then taken into custody.
One teenager was shot: a 15-year-old boy who was taken by taxi to a local hospital with as many as three gunshot wounds to the abdomen, authorities said. Last time he was said to be in critical but stable condition.
Fieros faces a variety of charges, including attempted murder, aggravated assault, illegal possession of a firearm and receiving stolen goods. Information about a possible lawyer for him was not immediately available.
The investigation is ongoing.
