BUDAPEST/STOCKHOLM. Two small buses collided on the way to the stadium during the World Athletics Championships.
Films spread on social media show, among other things, how a person falls from one of the buses.
– A lot of glass hit my right eye, says Jamaican Andrew Hudson.
On Thursday evening, the men’s 200 meter semi-finals took place in the World Athletics Championships, but on the way to the arena, several of the active participants met with an accident.
Videos that are spreading on social media show how two small buses collide right outside the arena and that an official falls from one of the buses.
Several 200-meter sprinters were on the buses. Including the 100-meter world champion Noah Lyles from the USA and Jamaica’s Andrew Hudson, who took his eye after the collision.
Reversal in the schedule
After the crash, the organizer changed the schedule for the 200m semifinals.
When it was time for the first semi, it was instead the runners who would run in semi-final two who stood in the starting blocks.
The first semi-final, featuring Noah Lyles and Andrew Hudson, was moved and ran last of all.
Got glass in the eye
Lyles impressed and easily made it to the final, but Hudson missed out on advancement.
– A lot of glass hit my right eye. I was with the doctor for about 20 minutes, Hudson says of the accident.
– I just tried to get the glass out of my eye and the doctor tried to get it out as best he could. Then I wanted to at least try to run because I’ve worked so hard to get here.
“Oh my God”
In the second semi-final, Shaun Maswanganyi from South Africa ran, who was shocked when Sportbladet showed him the clips where the buses collide and Hudson takes his eye.
– Oh wow. Oh my god, is he okay? says Maswanganyi.
– It is difficult and very unlucky to end up in such a situation, you don’t wish that on anyone. The organizer has done a good job so far but it’s unlucky when something like this happens right before the competition.
Noah Lyles didn’t take the time to stay in the mixed zone after his advance but announced that he is fine despite the crash.
– I’m fine, I’m healthy! Lyles shouted before running on.
Review routines
After the semi-finals, word came that the others involved in the accident are doing well.
“The local organizing committee is investigating the incident and reviewing transport procedures”writes the organizer.
