Burnout and mental health top the agenda of the summit on joy and integrity

This annual conference, which brings together physicians of a variety of specialties and physician wellness advocates from across the United States, aims to improve the overall well-being and quality of life of physicians.

For years, burnout, depression, and various mental health problems have become more prevalent among healthcare professionals. The current pandemic has only exacerbated these concerns. The 2022 report on physicians’ burnout and depression [Physician Burnout and Depression Report 2022] from Medscape reveals that 47% of doctors say they are exhausted, up from 42% last year.

Although many organizations and experts are working to develop and distribute resources and programs aimed at preventing and mitigating Burnout, there is still work to be done. For the Physician Wellness Coalition, in particular, this was the priority of the recent gathering in Denver, Colorado, USA. Conferences such as the Joy and Wholeness Summit offer attendees the opportunity to connect, collaborate and share best practices.

Attendees, representing dozens of organizations, heard the views of leading thought leaders and experts, including Stanford University’s Tait Shanafelt and Al’ai Alvarez, AdventHealth’s Omayra Mansfield, and coach / consultant Paul DeChant, in scope of an agenda that covered important topics such as mental health, issues affecting medical women, medical leadership, and higher medical education.

“The conference was a wonderful opportunity to connect with others who are passionate about the well-being of physicians and clinical practitioners.
