The match between Burnley and Fulham, initially scheduled on Sunday at 12:00 GMT, was postponed due to an increase in the number of positive cases for covid-19 in Fulham, the Premier League announced on Saturday.
“Following the postponement of their game against Tottenham on Wednesday, Fulham’s players and technical team underwent a new test and a rise in the number of positive cases for covid-19 was announced this morning,” the Premier League wrote in a release.
It is the fourth postponement of a game this season in England, after Newcastle-Aston Villa, in early December, Everton-Manchester City, on December 28, in addition to Tottenham-Fulham, which was due to be played on Wednesday.
“With few positive tests in the vast majority of clubs, the league continues to have confidence in its protocols related to covid-19,” said the Premier League, which does not consider interrupting its championship as some voices of English football claim , like Sam Allardyce, West Bromwich’s new coach.
“Those who tested positive have self-isolated, in accordance with the recommendations of the British government and the Premier League,” Fulham explained in a statement.
The dates of Fulham’s two postponed games are not yet known.
The game scheduled for Sunday was supposed to pit two teams in danger, as Burnley (16th) is just five points clear of Fulham (18th), first in the relegation zone.
