Burning Man is considered the mother of all desert festivals. This year, however, heavy rains are causing muddy chaos that has cut off tens of thousands of festival-goers from the outside world. And there is a threat of something even worse.

Year after year, a world of its own emerges in the middle of the Nevada desert: Burning Man attracts tens of thousands of people who indulge in a very special festival rush far from civilization. Huge buildings are erected every year and then completely torn down to emphasize the finite nature of everything. This year, however, things look completely different: Over 70,000 Burning Man visitors are currently stuck in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada. They were urged to seek shelter and ration their food, water and fuel after severe storms flooded the festival site. The situation even got to the point where even President Joe Biden was informed and the Nevada National Guard offered to help.
Rumors of Ebola outbreak
But Burning Man organizers are surprisingly emphatic that there is no cause for alarm. “We are very pleased and surprised that there is so much fuss about us,” Marian Goodell, CEO of the Burning Man Project, told NBC News. “We have made it very clear that we do not view this as an evacuation situation.” The organizers emphasize the counterculture spirit of the festival, which is about helping others. Given the dramatic conditions on the site, are they not overestimating themselves?

In a statement on the official Burning Man website, organizers write: “Burning Man is a community of people willing to support each other. We came here because we know this is a place where we can bring everything we need to survive. For this reason, we are all well prepared for a weather event like this. We have been doing drills for events like this. We are working full-time on all aspects of security and see our exodus as our next priority.” Rumors that there was already an Ebola outbreak on the site are dismissed as untrue.
