Burning barricades, Molotov cocktails. Berlin squatters resist hundreds of police officers

About two hundred masked people threw stones, flammable bottles, and firecrackers at the police. Tram tracks also blocked the streets, set up barricades and set them on fire. Police officers put out the fire with water cannons and smashed the barricades with armored vehicles.

At night, the situation calmed down, but from the morning there is a risk of further escalation. Rioters rush to the building, attacking police officers during various demonstrations.

Police say they are ready for many scenarios. “What happened yesterday is only a harbinger of what to expect,” a police spokesman said Thursday morning. There are about 350 police officers on site and additional reinforcements can be called. The inspection was scheduled to begin at eight o’clock in the morning.

Squatters and their followers have been trying for a long time to prevent the owner from having a fire inspection carried out in the house. He and the police suspect that they want to declare the building uninhabitable and then have it vacated.

The building at 94 Rižská Street in the Friedrichshain district is considered one of the last symbols of the far-left scene in Berlin. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, students or members of radical anarchist groups occupied dilapidated houses in the eastern part of the city, but as the popularity of these neighborhoods grew and property prices rose, many owners began to claim their property.
