UNUSUAL – Since Monday, February 1, a video showing the Burmese coup d’état led by the army, which arrested the head of the civilian government, Aung San Suu Kyi and declared a state of emergency for one year, has been circulating of the world.
It was not filmed by an official, but by a fitness teacher named Khing Hnin Wai. The footage, shared on Facebook, is surreal. We see the aerobics teacher in Naypyitaw doing her physical exercises against the background of electronic music, while behind her back, a column of armored vehicles and 4X4s pass on the Royal Lotus roundabout near the parliament.
As you can see below, this one remains unmoved. She performs her exercises and waves her arms to an Indonesian disco tune like nothing has happened.

Unbeknownst to her, history was being made behind her. Because the army took control of the country in the early hours on Monday morning, arresting de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior officials of her party. Army chief Min Aung Hlaing now has all “legislative, judicial and executive powers,” a move that ends a 10-year democratic parenthesis in Burma.
“What a harmony with the background music and the backdrop,” wrote Khing Hnin Wai in an ironic message. Before you hear the news [du coup d’État] in the morning, the video I made for the aerobics dance competition became an unforgettable memory. ”
A green background?
Quickly, the video went viral. It was reshared and posted on other social networks. A tweet containing the video had been viewed over 11.7 million times 24 hours after it was posted.
Some have hijacked her dance into fun memes of other recent historical moments, like the US Congress take last month – or added their favorite music tracks to the original video.
Others are suspicious. Internet users, who warn about the absence of shadow behind the fitness teacher, think that it is actually a green background. A flawed assumption, as foreshadowed by the user below on Twitter. He explains that there is a staircase behind her.

The clip was not to everyone’s liking, however, and army supporters hurled insults at the video’s author, who posted a new post Tuesday in self-defense. “I wasn’t dancing to make fun or ridicule an organization or to be stupid… I was dancing for a fitness dance competition,” she replied.
She added that she often used the same location, the roundabout, to film her workouts, posting more videos to prove it.

“As it’s not uncommon to see an official convoy pass through Naypyitaw, I thought it was normal, so I continued,” she concluded.
