“Burke & Hare – We Always Find a Dead Body” on TV: That’s what comedy is about

1828: Even if the common people in the Scottish capital Edinburgh do not notice it, the age of progress has begun in the scientific world. Two luminaries argue about the supremacy in the field of anatomy: While the ambitious Doctor Knox wants to open up to progress, his competitor Doctor Monro prefers more conservative methods. Both need the bodies of dead people. With a trick Monro succeeds in claiming all urban corpses for himself. A heavy blow for Knox – especially since the king announced his visit and called a medical competition for it. But then William Burke and William Hare surprisingly pay their respects to him. The two Irish immigrants had so far rather unsuccessfully kept themselves afloat as fraudulent street vendors – now they have heard that Doctor Knox pays good money for fresh corpses. Coincidentally, they have just one with them: the recently deceased subtenant from Hare’s apartment. The two are amply rewarded. And since Knox is constantly demanding supplies, a lucrative business opens up for the two of them. However, grave robbery does not suit them very well, and their attempts to “conjure up” fatal accidents fail miserably. So the not very squeamish Hare persuades his still hesitant friend to personally help out with the deaths. Burke, who has fallen in love with the boyish ex-prostitute and wannabe actress Ginny Hawkins and wants to impress her, reluctantly agrees. In the period that followed, there were increasing reports of missing people in Edinburgh, while Burke and Hare were soon wealthy enough to devote themselves to other business ideas. But when they get to do with the local crime king Danny McTavish and the active police chief Captain McLintoch becomes aware of the case, their lucky streak threatens to come to an abrupt end. In the 1930s to 1950s, the British Ealing studios were synonymous with black-humor cinema entertainment, and comedies such as “Nobility Committed” or “Ladykillers” became classics. In the course of a comeback that started in 2000, the script for “Burke & Hare – We always find a corpse” was created, which refers to the “West Port murders” that have gone down in criminal history. After a long break, the American comedy specialist John Landis was also looking for the right material for a return to the director’s chair and staged a funny and macabre burlesque about the immoral allure of quick money with the two British actors Simon Pegg and Andy Serkis – in the tried and tested Ealing tradition.
