An employee of a winery in the Burgundian city of Beaune has been caught stealing four bottles of Burgundy. The police found not only the four stolen bottles at the suspect’s home, but “his life’s work” of thousands of bottles of Burgundy.

Local media report this. Beaune police found a total of seven thousand bottles of Burgundy in wine cellars at the man’s home and that of his mother, with a combined value of at least 500,000 euros.

Among the bottles, for example, are examples from Vosne-Romanée for 1,000 euros each.

With the help of surveillance cameras at his last employer, the man was unmasked. The man is said to have been stealing Burgundy for at least fifteen years, including from previous employers.

Justice in Beaune currently assumes that the 56-year-old suspect has not resold any bottles. He has been released on conditions and will appear in court next summer.
