The official exit of the United Kingdom from the European Union, which has been completed these days half a year, seems to be not being as dramatic for foreign trade as could be foreseen at first. Despite the bad data for January, it has been recovering progressively over the following two months.At the end of the first quarter, exports have grown by 11% compared to the period January-March 2020, registering the best figures for a decade.
In total, goods have been sent to the British country worth 41.6 million euros. Last year 37.4 million were registered, while in 2011 the figure rose to 42.7. “We are noticing that we are returning to a normal rate of exports, we are already seeing the light after a few somewhat complex months,” says Ignacio SanMillán, member of the Plenary of the Burgos Chamber of Commerce and manager of the logistics company Asercomex.
But, which sectors are pulling more trade and transactions between Burgos and the United Kingdom? Of the nine chapters in which the Ministry of Industry and Commerce divides exports, those that include household appliances, electronics or furniture are the ones that have registered the greatest increase during the first quarter, with an increase over the same period of last year of 364% Of the barely 279,000 euros registered in 2020, it has been achieved in 2021 exceeding one million euros. However, in quantitative terms the greatest increase has been in the trade of metal, steel, iron or chemical products. Of the 23, 8 million between January and March went to 31.3 this year, an increase of 31% but 7.5 million.
Another of the chapters that has driven the transaction of goods with the United Kingdom has been the automotive components market, with an increase of 63% to 2.2 million euros, this figure is the most outstanding since the Ministry of Industry It has records, since the closest is 1.7 million in the first quarter of 2010. Regarding the sectors that have performed the worst, trade with raw materials (both animals and vegetables) stands out, where their transactions plummet to 433,000 euros after having reached 953,000 in 2020. “Expectations are for growth in the remainder of the year,” acknowledges San Millán.
