A strange burglary has been preoccupying the Police and the services of the Ministry of the Interior for several hours now. Specifically, according to information from in.gr, early in the afternoon, unknown persons broke into the office of the director of the Elections Directorate of the Ministry of the Interior, located on Evangelistrias Street in the center of Athens.
This is the office 304 of the head of the directorate which is responsible and has the responsibility for the conduct of the elections in the country and of course the preparation of the electoral rolls.
The concern about this breach is increasing as it occurred on the day that the Ministry of Interior’s conclusion on the scandal of leaking personal data of voters abroad for the benefit of Anna Michelle Asimakopoulou was handed over to the authorities.
The conclusion “also includes recommendations to further strengthen security measures in relation to the protection of personal data”.
How the burglary was discovered
The burglary appears to have taken place between 1.30pm and 2.30pm. The manager participated in a meeting at the ministry’s offices on Stadiou Street and asked his private for some documents.
The employee found that the door was open and there were obvious signs of a break-in on the lock, knob and other parts of the door. Immediate Action was informed and according to information the manager is expected to file a lawsuit with the AT Acropolis.
It is unknown what the perpetrators took
For the time being, it has not been clarified what the purpose of the burglary was, while information indicates that the police investigation in the area has not yet been completed.
It is unknown whether the perpetrator or perpetrators removed personal items or official documents or whether their purpose was to access the computers and electronic files with all that this entails in such a sensitive service.
It is also strange that none of the employees of the other offices on the same floor saw or heard anything during the disputed period as they reported to the police who rushed to the scene.
The conclusion on the personal data scandal
The interest and concern about the incident is enhanced by the fact that today the Ministry of the Interior announced that the Internal Audit Unit of the Ministry has completed the investigation and the conclusion on the case – personal data leak scandal for the benefit of MEP Anna Michelle Asimakopoulou – has been delivered to the Prosecutor’s Office.
No one can know if the burglary is related to this particular case. However, the ministry’s announcement states that the conclusion recommends that measures be taken based on the findings.
