With 7 burglaries per 1,000 homes, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes ranks 3rd region in metropolitan France with the most burglaries in 2022. By department, the situation is more fragmented. In Auvergne, the situation is generally good, except in the urban area of Clermont-Ferrand.
More and more burglaries in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes! According to a study published by INSEE, seven burglaries and attempted burglaries are counted per 1,000 dwellings in 2022 in the greater region. A figure that decreases between 2016 and 2022 but a figure that is misleading. Indeed, the number of recorded burglaries has strongly dropped in 2020 due to containment measures. Since then, the numbers are started to rise againwithout however regaining its pre-Covid level.
The Rhône and Puy-de-Dôme affected, Cantal quiet
At the national level, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is the third region of France the most robbed metropolitan area behind Île-de-France and Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur, according to data from the national police and gerndarmerie. But by zooming in more precisely, the situation is very disparate depending on the departments. The Rhône is the second most affected department in the metropolis with 10.2 burglaries per 1,000 dwellings, and therefore by far the most affected department in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. On the Auvergne side, it is Puy-de-Dome which is the most affected with 6.9 burglaries per 1000 homes, above the national average. Conversely, Allier, Haute-Loire and especially Cantal with only 170 burglaries recorded in 2022 are much less affected.

Urban areas and wealthy municipalities targeted
According to INSEE, it is not good to live in urban areas. Three out of four home burglaries are carried out in dense urban areas. In effect, “the more populated the area of attraction of cities, the higher the share of burglaries” informs us of the survey. For example, the urban area of Clermont-Ferrand has 8.7 burglaries per 1,000 dwellings, while that of Thiers has 3.7 per 1,000.
It should be noted that criminals also target the wealthiest towns, but are only very interested in second homes. The share of second homes in the most burglarized municipalities is 3.7%, while it is 29.3% in towns with no burglaries.
