The Municipality of Burgas has joined an international project aimed at reducing harmful emissions from car traffic. The project, called Zero Carbon Infrastructure (ZCI), was launched in March of this year and is funded by the Interreg Europe program.
As part of the European Union’s Green Deal, ambitious targets have been set for decarbonizing transport. Research conducted by the European Environment Agency (EEA) reveals that road transport accounts for the largest share of total transport emissions, with 72% of all greenhouse gases originating from domestic and international transport. Furthermore, 23% of transport greenhouse gas emissions in the EU come from urban areas.
The ZCI project, spanning four years, aims to support eight cities and regions across Europe in their efforts to develop green transport and zero-carbon infrastructure within their territories. To achieve this goal, a consortium of eight partners, led by Kronoberg County Administration in Sweden and supported by Erasmus University in Rotterdam, will collaborate to search for and test practical solutions to overcome the challenges they face.
The project will focus on several key areas, including:
1. Private (electric) vehicles: charging infrastructure – barriers and solutions.
2. Sustainable urban logistics.
3. The business model of sustainable urban mobility – incentives that drive demand for decarbonized transport solutions.
4. Transition to zero-carbon mobility: public acceptance and communication.
Through various activities, the project aims to support public organizations by identifying and sharing good practices, building the capacity of eight public bodies through training and knowledge transfer, and enhancing policy instruments to provide the necessary infrastructure and create confidence in the market.
The ZCI project has a total budget of €2,085,629.00, with €1,650,049.20 provided by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The consortium consists of eight partners, including the Municipality of Burgas, along with city and district administrations from Sweden, Finland, Slovenia, Spain, Ireland, Belgium, Italy, and Erasmus University in the Netherlands.

By actively participating in the ZCI project, the Municipality of Burgas is taking significant steps towards reducing emissions and promoting sustainable transportation solutions.
final report on minimum safeguards
Ns in reducing their carbon footprint by implementing innovative solutions for sustainable mobility. The Municipality of Burgas is one of the partners in this project, which is a great opportunity for the city to contribute to global efforts in combating climate change.
The main focus of the ZCI project is to develop and implement strategies and measures that will reduce the carbon emissions from car traffic. This includes promoting the use of renewable energies and improving energy efficiency in transport. By doing so, the project aims to create a more sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation system in the participating cities and regions.
The Interreg Europe program, which is funding the ZCI project, is dedicated to promoting cooperation and exchange of experiences between regions of different EU member states. Its low-carbon funding priority specifically aims at increasing the use of renewable energies and improving energy efficiency, aligning with the goals of the ZCI project.
By joining this international initiative, the Municipality of Burgas is demonstrating its commitment to sustainability and its dedication to reducing the carbon footprint of the city. This partnership provides an opportunity for the municipality to learn from other cities and regions, share best practices, and implement innovative solutions in order to achieve tangible results in reducing car emissions.
Overall, the Municipality of Burgas’ participation in the ZCI project is a positive step towards creating a cleaner and more sustainable urban environment. It aligns with the European Union’s goals of decarbonizing transport and contributes to the global efforts in mitigating climate change. Through this project, Burgas has the potential to become a model for other cities in implementing sustainable mobility solutions and reducing car emissions.
This is a significant step towards a greener and healthier future for Burgas. Commendable efforts towards reducing air pollution from cars must be celebrated and supported by other cities as well. Well done!
