Dieter Burdenski has died. The Bremen-born former goalkeeper made his Eredivisie debut for Vitesse in 1990 at the age of 39, making him the oldest ever goalkeeper in the Netherlands’ top flight. Burdenski was 73 years old.

The German received his youth training at Schalke 04, for whom he played last six games. After a stint at Arminia Bielefeld, Burdenski ended up at Werder Bremen in 1972.

Burdenski would play for that club for at least sixteen years and make 581 appearances. In 1988 he ended his career.

That same summer, AIK Solna convinced him not to resign, but to move to Sweden. Burdenski was the second goalkeeper, but he never played and left after only a month.

In 1990 Burdenski came out of retirement again, this time for Vitesse. The German made his debut for the Arnhem team in November in the game they won against NEC (0-2) due to a red card from the first goalkeeper Raimond van der Gouw.

In the same month, Burdenski played against MVV Maastricht and PSV (both 1-1). Shortly after the match against the Eindhoven team, he ended his career again, this time for good.
