Bungie Faces Community Backlash and Mass Pre-Order Cancellations for Destiny 2 Expansion

Recent reports regarding one of PlayStation’s studios were extremely disturbing. Bungie dismissed part of the team and made decisions to internally delay the release of the expansion for Destiny 2 and the next game. Many recipients have decided that they do not want to wait any longer, others show solidarity with those laid off, which results in an increasing number of withdrawals of pre-orders for the expansion.

Destiny 2: Lightfall is the latest addition to Bungie’s great production, which had to face considerable community dissatisfaction. The item received a rating of 69% from journalists, meanwhile the content did not steal the hearts of the most devoted fans (2.9/10), therefore the latest reviews of Destiny 2 on Steam are “mixed” (only 63% of the reviews are positive).

Some enthusiasts of the series had high hopes for Destiny 2 The Final Shape, believing that the title would provide the expected content and restore the best possible experience, but the studio’s recent problems have to some extent made the final straw.

The community is massively canceling orders for the upcoming expansion, and at the same time some customers are encouraging other people to take the same steps – Destiny 2 supporters want to show that Bungie is on the wrong track and they do not intend to wait any longer for a new story.

Several people told me they made TFS refunds today.

I wanted to give them a chance, but I didn’t. Maybe I’ll buy it when it’s on sale.

These are particularly disturbing reports for Bungie, which was reporting significantly worse results even before canceling pre-orders for Destiny 2 The Final Shape and decided to take restrictive actions.

The strong reception of the expansion may change the players’ approach, but the title will not be released on the market until the middle of next year. PlayStation Studio must act to prove to the community that the strategy is well-thought-out and will bring positive results.
