This year’s march to commemorate the Bundeswehr is taking place in large parts of Berlin. Drivers in the capital must prepare for traffic jams and delays.
On Thursday, the Bundeswehr’s memorial march will end at the Bundeswehr memorial at the Bendlerblock. According to the Bundeswehr Reservists’ Association, by then the participating soldiers will have covered a total distance of 117 kilometers. In addition, 3,400 meters will be covered. These distances are a reminder of the 117 Bundeswehr casualties and “the 3,400 soldiers and civilian employees who lost their lives as a result of their service,” the Reservists’ Association further announced.
Since the route of the march leads through numerous Berlin districts, extensive traffic disruptions are to be expected. There may be restrictions along the route between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., the Berlin Traffic Information Center (VIZ) announced.
The areas affected are the Heerstrasse, Messedamm, Kurfürstendamm, Hardenbergstrasse, Strasse des 17. Juni, Ebertstrasse and Tiergartenstrasse to Hildebrandstrasse, where the Bendlerblock is located. It will not be possible to overtake the soldiers. In addition, according to VIZ, Heerstrasse will be closed off in the direction of the city. From 2 p.m. onwards, it will be impossible to get through Scheidemannstrasse in either direction.
According to the Reservists’ Association, this year’s march in remembrance will lead from the Lehnin military training area past Potsdam. On Thursday, the march will then go to the Reichstag building and the Brandenburg Gate as far as the Bendlerblock. A wreath-laying ceremony will take place there. The event is open to the public “in order to give those who died in the service of society a place in public remembrance and thus contribute to the culture of remembrance.”
