Bremerhaven (dpa) – Schoolchildren in Bremerhaven cast their vote in the junior election for the federal election today. Thousands of children and young people also take part in the school project in the city of Bremen, Lower Saxony and other federal states. In doing so, they learn important things about the election and finally vote on ballot papers like in the real federal election.
The entire voting process is simulated – with voting notifications, voting booths, ballot boxes and voting slips for the constituency. In the project, the pupils also learn to form an electoral board, to create a voter register and to organize the process in the polling station. “The aim of the junior election is to practice and experience democracy,” said Bremen’s education department.
In the state of Bremen, more than 80 schools take part, in Lower Saxony more than 500, as an overview on the project’s homepage shows. Nationwide there are therefore more than 4,500 schools. Many schools organize the election the week before election Sunday.
The sponsor of the junior election project is the non-partisan association Kumulus from Berlin. The patron of the junior election for the 2021 federal election is the President of the German Bundestag, Wolfgang Schäuble. The project is funded by the German Bundestag, the Federal Ministry of Family Affairs and the Federal Agency for Civic Education.
