Bundesliga: Why FC Bayern Munich should extend Thomas Müller’s contract – SPORT1 commentary by Kerry Hau

First Manuel Neuer, now Thomas Müller? Those responsible at FC Bayern plan to sign the next deserving player after the goalkeeper by 2025. There must be no other option!

Bavaria without Müller? Müller without Bayern, but at another German club, in another European league or even on another continent? Inconceivable! And because he himself has now made it clear that he wants to play until 2025, discussions about an early extension should be intensified and brought to a conclusion as quickly as possible – so that the crowd favorite doesn’t start to ponder or get the impression that he is no longer needed.

Yes, the Müller-always-plays days are rightly over, he has his absolute best years as a formative player figure behind him and will be 35 next September. But: He is still an incredibly important piece of the puzzle for this team. And like Neuer, he should have the chance for a second “Finale Dahoam” – because the Champions League final will take place in Munich in 2025!

In the Bayern dressing room, his positively annoying nature combined with his ambition is enormously valued. On the one hand, he’s not above having fun, but on the other hand, he moves forward on the pitch with the same commitment as he did as an 18-year-old. This makes him a role model, and not just for younger players.

Müller has to get used to the fact that Jamal Musiala is in his favorite position

What Müller has to get used to: Jamal Musiala is in his favorite position in the attacking midfield. What coach Thomas Tuchel is now executing is nothing other than the plan that Julian Nagelsmann, Hasan Saihamidzic and Co. already had.

It’s okay that Müller is no longer a regular player, but that new, promising players like Mathys Tel are also coming up in other positions up front. If he continues to accept the role of challenger, as he currently does, Tuchel can now and then offer him the prospect of a starting eleven, as he did in the Champions League against FC Copenhagen, and does not neglect him; there is nothing to be said against a quick contract extension.

A situation like that in 2015 surrounding Bastian Schweinsteiger, who once again followed Manchester United’s call in the autumn of his career because, among other things, he no longer really felt needed by his coach (Pep Guardiola), should not happen. Keep Müller and keep Müller happy – that should be Bayern’s motto now. And then he can end his great career in grand style in 2025 – ideally with a Champions League triumph in his own living room!
