Bayern Munich once again suffered defeat in the Bundesliga, this time to Mainz on Matchday 29. The Bavarians are now four games without a win, leaving Borussia Dortmund to take the championship lead if they beat Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.
However, Bayern had started the game well by leading at half-time thanks to a goal from Sadio Mané on a pass from João Cancelo. But as soon as they returned from the locker room, the Bavarians began to feel the pressure and Mainz took the opportunity to lay the foundations for a memorable victory in front of their supporters. Ludovic Ajorque equalized in the 65th minute after errors from Sommer and Joao Cancelo, before Leandro Barreiro Martins completed the turnaround less than ten minutes later.
Mainz kept the pressure on and added a third goal through Aaron Martin in the 79th minute. With this defeat, Bayern remain at 59 points and risk losing their place as leader of the championship. Mainz, meanwhile, provisionally climb to sixth place with 45 points.
For Thomas Tuchel, who replaced Julian Nagelsmann just a few weeks ago, the balance sheet is negative with only two wins in seven games. Bayern have also been eliminated from the Champions League and the German Cup since Tuchel’s arrival. The Bavarians will have to quickly find their form to hope to retain their title of champion of Germany.
