Bundesliga: Union ends Frankfurt home series

Union Berlin wins at Eintracht Frankfurt and passes Hessen in the Bundesliga table. The climber’s two hits were gifts of unity.

In protest against the schedule on Monday, the Frankfurt fans’ active scene released the grandstand on which they otherwise stand and cheer on their team. Without the usual support, the Adi Hütter team performed poorly. The second loss in a row in the league was deserved.

“It is a very bitter defeat that bothers me a lot,” said Frankfurt coach Adi Hütter: “We practically shoot two balls in ourselves.” Berlin’s Marius Bülter said: “We swam in the last half hour, but overall we defended that well.” Coach Urs Fischer enthused: “It was a great game. I am very satisfied. We defended with everything we had.”

Four days after the 4-1 win in the Europa League against Salzburg, the Hessians had a hard time. Union, who had to do without his yellow-captain Christopher Trimmel, disturbed early and aggressively and also had opportunities. Yunus Malli gave the best until then when he badly hit the ball ten meters in front of the goal after a cross (22nd).

Hübner almost with an own goal

Marius Bülter’s shot was blocked by David Abraham. Marvin Friedrich headed just past the following corner kick (35 ‘). The promoted player was better in the first half, but would still have been almost behind at the break. Florian Hübner headed a cross just past his own goal.

Odd misunderstanding

The second half then quickly culminated. It was a very strange gate through which the Berliners took the lead. Frankfurt’s Abraham and Erik Durm thought that Kevin Trapp would come out of his goal and pick up the ball. But that was a misunderstanding. Christopher Lenz switched quickly, fitting Sebastian Andersson, who effortlessly pushed in his ninth goal of the season (48th).

It was only after a good hour of play that Eintracht became more powerful. After the twelfth corner kick, Goncalo Paciencia headed the ball just over the goal (62 ‘).

Two own goals

The SBU’s second gift followed. Trapp let a cross bounce forward, Evan Ndicka got the ball to his feet and stumbled into the net (67.). Paciencia immediately got the chance to score the goal, but Union goalkeeper Rafal Gikiewicz fended off brilliantly.

However, the Hessians came back late. Substitute Andre Silva shot Huebner with the hoe, this goal also came less from a good offensive performance (79th). In the final phase, there was still an opportunity to equalize, but Gikiwiecz and his defense cleared the turmoil. The Unioners’ second away win in a row was perfect.

After the Europa League second leg in Salzburg on Thursday (27.02.20), Frankfurt on Sunday (01.03.20) will continue with an away game at Werder Bremen. Union meets VfL Wolfsburg on Sunday afternoon.
