- VfB Stuttgart: Alexander Nübel, Pascal Stenzel, Jeff Chabot, Angelo Stiller, Frans Krätzig, Atakan Karazor, Chris Führich, Deniz Undav, Enzo Millot, Jamie Leweling, Ermedin Demirovic
- SC Freiburg: Florian Müller, Lukas Kübler, Christian Günter, Philipp Lienhart, Max Rosenfelder, Vincenzo Grifo, Maximilian Eggestein, Ritsu Doan, Patrick Osterhage, Merlin Röhl, Junior Adamu
SC Freiburg will face VfB Stuttgart in the Bundesliga opener. Freiburg lost both of their Bundesliga games against VfB for the first time since 2017/18. If the newly crowned Champions League participant has their way, that should not change at the start of the new season.
However, VfB coach Sebastian Hoeneß will have to do without a German European Championship participant for the time being! Maximilian Mittelstädt did not survive the Supercup against Leverkusen unscathed, had to cut back on training during the week – and will only start from the bench for the time being.

Instead, Bayern’s loanee, Frans Krätzig, starts. The left-footer came from the record champions on loan before the season as Mittelstädt’s backup, and now unexpectedly makes his first league appearance in 2024/25 from the start.

Julian Schuster, born in Bietigheim-Bissingen near Stuttgart, is about to make his Bundesliga debut as head coach of SC Freiburg. Schuster played his first two Bundesliga games for VfB Stuttgart in the 2007/08 season.
He succeeds Christian Streich, who was previously in charge of the SCF for 489 competitive matches in a row. Schuster will try to improve the poor home record of the previous season, in which Freiburg only picked up 22 home points and ended up in 15th place in the home table – the weakest home result since the relegation season of 2014/15.
Stuttgart’s impressive preseason
Last season, VfB Stuttgart equaled its Bundesliga points record from the 1991/92 championship season with 73 points, converted to the three-point rule. The Swabians had never before scored so many points in a season with 34 games. This means that VfB is taking part in the Champions League for the first time since 2009/10. After 1979 and 2003, VfB Stuttgart became runners-up in the Bundesliga for the third time. VfB thus improved by 14 places compared to the previous season – a record set between two consecutive Bundesliga seasons.
Players in focus
Today, the focus is particularly on Deniz Undav, who collected 27 points (18 goals, nine assists) in the last Bundesliga season. In the 3-1 win in Freiburg in February, he was directly involved in all three VfB goals (1 goal, two assists). Chris Führich, who scored three goals against SC Freiburg last season, will also play an important role. Führich collected 15 points (8 goals, seven assists) last season. On the VfB Stuttgart side, Ermedin Demirovic is also about to make his 125th Bundesliga game and his debut for VfB. Demirovic previously played 69 competitive games for SC Freiburg, scoring eight goals and providing ten assists.
