Bundesliga: The biggest card sinner in the last 20 years

Everyone would like to have an ace up their sleeve.

However, care must be taken when playing cards to avoid being ripped off. The term “ass card”, on the other hand, can be traced back to football – and in this game cards are the order of the day, even if it is more manageable with yellow and red than with some complex card “duplicating”.

No one has collected more minus points in the last 20 years

Card collectors are often referred to as “bad boys” in football, and Austria Klagenfurt’s midfield strategist Turgay Gemicibasi is definitely one of them this season. With his red card in the 0: 6 debacle against RB Salzburg, the German-Turk set an inglorious negative record.

LAOLA1 trawled through the statistics and comes to the conclusion: In the last 20 years, not a single Bundesliga player has collected more minus points than the courted Pacult protégé (Pacult angry at Gemicibasi >>>), although the season used to include even more games!

In addition to nine yellow cards, there are three exclusions, one yellow-red, two reds – and in just 22 appearances this season, as he will now miss his fifth and sixth game this season due to his red suspension.

“Repeat offenders” Gemicibasi

Over motivated? Too impulsive? Too negligent? The motives remain in the dark. The fact is, however, that the midfielder is a “repeat offender”. If you look at the history books, many other Bundesliga footballers over the past 20 years can see this.

Even if Gemicibasi got away without exclusion in the last two seasons in the 2nd division at Blau-Weiss Linz, he always collected double-digit yellow cards:

Saison games Tore Assists Gelb Yellow Red Rot
2021/22 (Klagenfurt) 22 6 3 9 1 2
2020/21 (BW Linz) 27 6 8 15
2019/20 (BW Linz) 26 2 1 12

Never more than 3 exclusions in one season since 2001/02

The situation is different this season – albeit at an even higher level in the Bundesliga and with a new club. The motto should be “One man sees red” because of the color scheme.

Even in the battered Klagenfurt squad, Gemicibasi sets a bad example. Although the Carinthians certainly imagined promotion to the Bundesliga differently with ten exclusions (!) in 26 rounds, it should be noted that quite questionable decisions led to one or the other card. Coach Pacult would confirm that – not for the first time.

Three exclusions, that is almost a third, are attributed to Gemicibasi – an inglorious figure.

Especially when you consider that in the past 20 years no one has been ruled out more than three times in a season with a few rounds left. Only one saw three straight reds, but most recently caused positive headlines by saving the life of Austria’s Georg Teigl: WAC professional Luka Lochoshvili. And what was going on with Ivica Vastic in his professional farewell season at LASK?

The card sinners of the last 20 years

It’s the sum that counts, because in addition to the impending third suspension after an exclusion, Gemicibasi has already missed two yellow cards after the fifth and ninth yellow card – making a total of six games suspension.

Who remembers Adnan Mravac, Maynor Suazo or Ilco Naumoski? They all do not come close to the negative yield of today’s Klagenfurt professionals. In this list, one or the other well-known name appears to reminisce.

In order to make this scope more tangible, the following point key comes into play:

Yellow card = 1 point, yellow-red = 3 points, red = 5 points

Most yellow cards

A look at the yellow cards is also quite exciting. Because some players have understood well how to escape exclusions or to keep them low in their careers, but collected the yellow box like sand by the sea.

Unreachable in this respect was the unfortunately deceased ex-Austria, -Sturm – and Carinthia player Adam Ledwon, who managed the feat of collecting 18 (!) yellow cards in two seasons, but never sent off in these seasons became.

Ilco Naumoski also seems to be at the forefront – although there was certainly one or the other yellow card for referee criticism or other antics.
