Bundesliga soccer team 1. FC Union Berlin mourns the loss of its honorary president: Günter Mielis, co-founder and long-time official of Köpenicker, died on Friday at the age of 98. The Champions League participant did not provide any information about the cause of death.
“With Günter, our club is losing a personality and a great Unioner who shaped the history of our club over many decades like no other,” said Union President Dirk Zingler. “We will preserve his memory and continue his work for the benefit of 1. FC Union Berlin. As president, I feel deeply committed to Günter’s work for our club.”
Mielis played a major role in the founding of the club in 1966. Between 1975 and 1982 he was president of the Unioner. Before and after he also worked in various functions. Until the end he was at the club’s side as an advisor and contact person. According to the club’s statement, Mielis experienced the Eiserne’s upswing in recent years with “pride and joy”.
