Freiburg head coach Christian Streich was voted coach of the year. 706 VDS members took part in the vote, the election has been held since 1960. The closing date for entries was July 25th. Nkunku prevailed in a neck-and-neck race with 134 votes ahead of world footballer Robert Lewandowski, who has meanwhile switched from Bayern Munich to FC Barcelona. The Bundesliga top scorer received six fewer votes than Nkunku. National goalkeeper Kevin Trapp from Eintracht Frankfurt ended up in 3rd place with 65 votes.
