Bundesliga premiere for the Straubing Spiders: For the first time in their almost 40-year club history, the American footballers from Lower Bavaria are playing in the GFL, the German Football League. The Spiders play their first game of the season against the Allgäu Comets in Kempten. Kick-off is at 3 p.m. (May 22nd) in the Iller Stadium. The Spiders have their first home game on June 11th.
Spiders unbeaten last season
The Straubing Spiders were founded in 1984. Last year they managed to get promoted to the German Football Oberhaus (GFL) unbeaten. Lower Bavaria’s goal for the season is to stay up. In addition to the Spiders, the Allgäu Comets in Kempten and the Munich Cowboys also play as representatives from Bavaria in the GFL.

After promotion to the GFL, the goal for the Straubing Spiders is first of all to stay up in the league: “But I don’t see a big difference to the teams from Ravensburg, Munich, Marburg or Kempten. Why should you queue up,” says Spider’s head coach Max Macek confidently . The squad of the first team of the Straubinger American Footballers are more than 60 players. “50 of them can be used per game,” explains Spiders spokesman Max Andorfer. “But we are all pure amateurs in the GFL, so not all players are always available and there will be injuries.” Max Andorfer, who plays in the Spiders’ offensive line, wants to make the GFL premiere a success: “It doesn’t make sense to go there and say, let’s see. Quite simply, I want to win!”
